NANSHA BAMBOO ART SPACE
Duration : 1 month
Submission Requirement : 4x A1 presentation boards, 1x scaled model & a 3 minutes video
Upon completing site analysis in Project 2, this project entrusted us with designing a memory repository for users in Machap Baru with an approximate internal size of 450sqm, emphasising a strong engagement and relationship to the site, spatial experiences, and programmatic requirements.
Users should be inspired and informed in ways that convey the spirit of the place (genius loci) through the employment of architectural principles, materiality, sustainability, and constructability in the creation of a memory repository that provides a fantastic spatial experience for users.
THE ECLIPSE
As the world is progressing rapidly, it is our responsibility to restore the identity of endangered traditional crafts which has been lost through time. “THE ECLIPSE” intends to initiate a poetic bamboo art space that functions as an art gallery with an overall form reflecting a prototype developed from a Wau. Locals have developed the kite which originated from China, infusing their own cultural essence and meanings, called “Wau”. Kites soaring over the sky are the love engraved in the souls of the Malays, and the yearning for freedom and passion. The simple kite is no longer a paper kite in the hands of the Malays, but an art, a faith, and the wings that carry their beautiful long-cherished wishes, fluttering in the wind. Bringing “Wau” back to China displays the history of cultural exchange between both regions. By creating “THE ECLIPSE“, younger generations can seize this opportunity to enhance their relationship with a traditional craft while the older generations are able to reminisce

Reflection
The project is talking about the concept of old and new. The design process was very tough for me in a way where I get stuck very often. However, I am very happy that I could manage to achieve this level of outcome. I think there are more improvements can made, for example the sections, design thinking, consideration and etc.
Overall, I'm really happy to get a chance to design such kind of buildings, as I'm now more aware of the poetics, details and also the intangible elements when I'm in different spaces.
