EXPERIENCING PLACE - MEMORY REPOSITORY

Duration : 5 weeks

Submission Requirement : 23 - 30 x A3 presentation boards, 5 x A1 presentation boards, 4 x workshop submissions

Upon completing site analysis in Project 2, this project entrusted us with designing a memory repository for users in Machap Baru with an approximate internal size of 450sqm, emphasising a strong engagement and relationship to the site, spatial experiences, and programmatic requirements.

Users should be inspired and informed in ways that convey the spirit of the place (genius loci) through the employment of architectural principles, materiality, sustainability, and constructability in the creation of a memory repository that provides a fantastic spatial experience for users.

THE FORGOTTEN

History plays a significant role in defining the genius loci of a place. While extracting the essence of the Machap Baru, its being realized that the peace enjoyed by the current generation was gained through the sacrifice by the older generation. They have experienced the war, flood, conflict of communist party, and also had to work hard in the plantation to earn an income. Their blood, sweat, tears are being trade for the peace, allowing the "NEW" to enjoy the culture & traditions left by the "OLD".

Reflection

The project is talking about the concept of old and new. The design process was very tough for me in a way where I get stuck very often. However, I am very happy that I could manage to achieve this level of outcome. I think there are more improvements can made, for example the sections, design thinking, consideration and etc.

Overall, I'm really happy to get a chance to design such kind of buildings, as I'm now more aware of the poetics, details and also the intangible elements when I'm in different spaces.
